Shag area rugs have been making a come back over the last few years. Their beauty, softness and comfort make them a great addition to any home, office, apartment or condo. They do a great job of adding style and color to neutrally colored areas. There are several types of shag rugs available. Which one you buy depends on where you are using it and the feel and look you desire.

Shag area rugs usually have a higher pile than other types of rugs. Typically, the pile is up to 3 or 4 inches long. However, short shag rugs exist which has a shorter, more dense pile. However, the more popular look are the shaggy rugs most where the pile just lays there.

Flokati Shag Rugs

Flokati rugs originated from a village in Greece. They used the wool from sheeps and goats to make rugs, bedding, blankets and clothing. These rugs come in a variety of grades. Grades are simply the weight of the rug. The larger the weight of the rug the greater the grade and thickness. If you are using a flokati rug in a heavily trafficked area then you should buy a heavier (grams) rug.

Chenille Shag Rugs

Chenille is actually the process in which these types of rugs are made. Chenille area rugs are made of several materials including cotton, rayon and polyester. This type of processing creates a very soft and comfortable rug. This is probably the softest shag area rug that you will find.

Synthetic Shag Rugs

These shag rugs are made with synthetic fibers to replicate the feel of a natural rug. These come in a wide range of styles, colors and sizes. Synthetic shag rugs are are usually less expensive because of the man made material and are generally easier to clean.

Olefin is a common synthetic material used to produce a synthetic shag rug. Olefin is extremely tough and is resistant to stains, mold, mildew and will repel water. Olefin is sometimes referred to as polypropylene, polyolefin, or polyethylene

Leather Shag Rugs

These fun rugs come in several types of darker colors and have a great, authentic look. Essentially, these are strips of leather that are attached to a study backing material. Leather shag rugs are very durable and will last a long time if maintained properly. One drawback with these rugs is that they can be very expensive and generally cost more than other types of materials.

Wool Shag Rugs

These are great for comfort and durability. Wool shag area rugs are best for low traffic areas since they tend to shed more than other types of materials. Bedrooms, family room and other low traffic places might be good for this type of shag rug.

T Shirt Shag Rugs

These make great additions to kids or teenagers bedrooms. They are produced using recycled t-shirts remnants. T-Shirt shag rugs come in a variety of colors and styles because of the material it is produced from.

As you can see shag area rugs can be made with a variety of materials. If you are looking to spend very little you might search the synthetic shag rugs while if you are looking to make a statement and don’t mind spending a few bucks take a look at the leather shag rugs.

For years shag area rugs were thought of as being retro items that had no place in the décor of today. This has changed drastically over the last few years. Shag area rugs have grown to be one of the most popular types of floor covering. Long gone are the days of green, wall to wall shag carpet; area rugs are now the best way to bring in the modern shag look. These area rugs are a great way to bring a modern element into the room without overwhelming the space. With so many different styles, shapes and designs available, these rugs are perfect for virtually any room and décor theme. For this reason alone, they have become one of the go to items for any home.

Choosing the perfect shag area rug for your home can be tricky. Since they are such unique, eye catching pieces, it is important to pair these rugs with the perfect accessories and furniture. These rugs look best when they are used along with other modern décor elements. Placing a shag area rug with a streamlined coach, simple furniture and clean cut lines is the best way for the rug to be showcased. When these rugs are paired with busy prints or ornate furniture they can seemingly get lost.

These are rugs are made in almost every size and shape imaginable. Taking the time to determine which size area rug would best fit your room is important. Often times, these area rugs are used in living rooms or bedrooms, where the rug helps to bring the look together. Making sure that the rug is a perfect fit for the furniture to be placed around or on, helps to keep the room looking polished and complete. If the rug is too large or too small, it can look as if it was a last minute addition to the room.

Shag area rugs are fairly simple to clean. Since the long weave of the rug can sometimes get caught in vacuums, one of the easiest way to clean them is by shaking. This helps to rid the rug of dirt, dust and other elements. It is important to take this into consideration when buying a shag area rug. If you are living in an apartment complex on an upper level, it may be difficult for you to transport the area rug outdoors for a good shake.

Area rugs are turning out to be very widespread in western cultures and in particular dark rugs are now being utilized to create a distinct style statement in the middle of an area. Black rugs used to be draped on walls as they were believed to be too expensive and of superior quality to be located on the floor. At this point, besides black, there are so countless shades, styles, shapes, quality and designs to select from it becomes mind-boggling. It is extremely critical to decide on the appropriate area rugs for your house no matter the décor. You can pick out styles from conventional to modern to accomplish that ideal appearance.

Here are a few suggestions that you may pursue in order to pick out a superb area rug.

1. Color. When you are searching for that ideal area rug for a space with gentle or light colors then decide on a rug that is either darn brown, black or has a dark border. If you have not utilized black anywhere else in the space then this dark rug will look excellent in the room. An additional suggestion would be simply to pick your preferred color and include white to it. Having said that, if you are seeking for a rug or methods to make a space look more roomy then a white or soft colored wool area rug is exactly what you need.

2. Dimensions. If you are seeking for an area rug for a larger space then putting the rug in the center of the room will define a room’s space. Then you can position furniture around it and it should measure 4 foot x 6 foot or 6 foot x 8 foot. If you are hunting for a rug to put on a hard wood or tiled floor then make sure that you are leaving at a minimum of 8 inches of free space on all sides of the rug. A rug that measures 8 feet x 11 feet or greater is suitable for living rooms, family rooms or dining rooms. 3 feet x 5 feet to 4 feet x 6 feet is the ideal dimension for area rugs if you are wanting to put them in a bathroom, kitchen, foyer or underneath a table. However, it is extremely crucial to keep in mind that you ought to always select a rug that you adore and that draws your attention and do not pick out a rug simply because you believe it will feel correct in the room.

3. Style. When choosing the style think about the statement the rug will create in the room in your home. Will you use it as a stand on it’s own rug or beneath a coffee table or some other furnishings? Find a rug that complements the other colors in the room so this way it will connect the room together.

The basic purpose of area rugs is to transform a bare surface or tiled floor into a comfortable and receptive atmosphere. Another function is to provide self-expression via various styles and making use of an enclosed open space. The variety of distinctive types available can help you choose the one that best fits your area’s color plan and décor. For example, selecting dark rugs is a smart decision if the complete atmosphere of your room or lounge is light colored or adorned with muted items. If you have a glimpse in the decorating publications, you may see lots of homes with light tan walls and furnishings, with a spectacular black rug as a highlight in the center of the room.

There are several places in your house where you are able to position area rugs for you to give a totally new and appealing look. Area rugs are perfect for making your home feel comfy and inviting however that doesn’t mean that you can merely choose any style and size area rug. Among all aspects associated with area rugs, deciding on the best size is as vital as deciding on the best design and color. For you to be able to obtain the rug that will work best in a particular location, the perfect size is just as important as the color and style. Area rugs come in a variety of sizes and shapes. They can range from 4×6 up to 9×12.

Choosing the wrong size area rug can drastically change the appearance of the room and possibly make it worse. For example, if you are using a 4×6 rug in a huge living room, the inadequate size of the area rug will be emphasized. Utilizing a larger area rug on a smaller sized room will likely make it appear congested and vice versa. If your reason for buying an area rug is to stick it either in the bathroom, hallway or in your kitchen, you should consider rugs that are 4 x 6, 3 x 5, or 2 x 3 to meet your needs. These dimensions are the ordinary dimensions for the spaces in your home and for the significantly larger rooms such as the living and dining rooms, area rugs with proportions of 9 x 12, 8 x 10, and 5 x 8 is sufficient. For your bedrooms, a 4 x 6 carpet would work.

Prior to starting your shopping for rugs, it is suggested that you first obtain the precise dimensions of the space where you will end up positioning your carpets. You can indicate the critical locations and assess the amount of space in the particular room. You should also know exactly where you plan to place the area rug that you will be buying and evaluate whether it is feasible to position a rug in that area.

You may find it difficult to find an area rug for a very large room. Due to affordability and larger demand, smaller area rugs are much more plentiful than a large area rug. If you are truly motivated to purchase a large area rug, you can search for carpet suppliers and retailers. Once you find a few you can inquire if they can accommodate tailor made area rugs to satisfy your precise specification. You can search on the internet for rug sellers and prior to choosing one, compare prices from different dealers.

One method to make your house much more attractive would be to add the comfort of shag area rugs. These rugs are available in several designs, shades and textures which means you will be able to come across the perfect rugs to beautify your home. They are not very costly and will help your home be much more appealing and cozy. You can find them on the internet and through virtually all retail and home decorating outlets. By incorporating shag area rugs, you will make any area in your home a more comfortable and inviting feel. For those who have hardwood flooring, they will look and feel much softer and warmer by adding shag area rugs. They also work well laid over ceramic tile and polished concrete. No one wants to lay down on tile, concrete or wood but when you a comfy rug to the area it instantly becomes more attractive.

Consider placing a shag carpet in front of your fireplace for that extra little bit of “ambiance”. It is a fantastic spot to cuddle up with your “sweetie” or simply to have a fast rest anytime. Another great place would the bedroom. When you get out of bed it just feels better on your feet to step on a nice plush area rug instead of a cold hard floor.

Shag rugs come in a number of shapes, textures and designs. They are usually made with acrylic yarn as well wool or a mix of both materials. They could be circular, rectangle-shaped or square and the shag pile is usually 1 inch to 2.5 inches tall. The bigger the pile, the softer the rug. If you lay down on a 1 inch pile versus a 2.5 inch pile you will be able to notice the difference and increase in comfort. More costly shag rugs are hand weaved for toughness.

Another great feature of shag area rugs is that they are effortless to maintain and keep clean. They simply can be picked up, shaken and the loose dirt and dust is removed. The shaking movement also re-fluffs the pile to help the rug restore its initial appearance. These types of rugs may also be washed by vacuuming and by being professionally dry cleaned. If your rug has been neglected for too long, has a stain or is really dirty you should consider taking it to the dry cleaners. Taking it to a professional from time to time will add years to your rugs life.

Shag area rugs are enjoying a resurgence of popularity. The options available today exceed the choices of previous years. These very appealing area rugs can add soft elegance to a room. Or, by selecting one of the more vibrant colors, you can give a room a fun, festive atmosphere.

The material shag rugs are made of today varies more than it did in the 1970’s era. You will want to pursue the various material options in relation to the amount of traffic the rug will endure. Cleaning procedures differ depending on the material. You will want to regularly vacuum your shag rug. A weekly trip outside to energetically shake the dust and dirt from your rug will prolong its life and its beauty. Before selecting a shag area rug, read the care instructions. Wool rugs tend to repel dirt better than synthetic materials. Leather shag rugs require dry cleaning.

A child’s room or teenager’s domain would be a perfect place for a shag area rug. Bright orange, red, blue, green, or purple are possible ways to add an imaginative touch to such a room. A young person would probably like a shag rug made from cotton jersey tee shirt strips. These rugs are whimsical and come in dazzling colors.

For a more sophisticated style of shag area rug, you might want to explore those with a pattern design. Shag rugs with blocks of different colors, geometric circles, or stripes would look great in a living area. Leather shag rugs are especially stunning. The smaller rugs can be used under an accent table or as a wall hanging. Few rugs offer such decorative versatility.

In addition to standard neutral tones, the newer colors such as herb green, kiwi, butterscotch, lilac, or ocean blue are stylish choices for shag area rugs to use in a bedroom. Their soft hue prepares you for the pleasant sensation your feet will experience when you step on the rug.

One other example of the way in which shag area rugs have moved into this era is the bamboo shag rug. While maintaining some of their retro symbolism, they fit perfectly into a home where environmentally conscious people reside. A bamboo shag area rug is non-toxic and eco-friendly. Adding these to your home will express your concern for the environment and hopefully encourage visitors who see these beautiful rugs to select similar ones for their home.

Shag rugs are a great investment for a home or business, they add a lot of beauty to the area that they are placed, the problem that people think exists is that they are hard to clean, that’s not true and with a few steps you will be able to clean your shag rug very easily.

First thing that someone should do is to set the vacuum on the highest pile setting, the one that sets the brushes the furthest from the floor(if your vacuum is setup differently) if your vacuum does not come with different settings, try to get closest to this setting as possible. Then start to vacuum away from the pile, shag works best with short, back and forth motions to pull the pile up as much as possible and avoid the vacuum getting stuck and seems like it is burning up, then work your way with the vacuum left to right across the floor and go back over it in the perpendicular direction, now disconnect the vacuum hose and use the open tube to suck up dirt, place the hose’s nozzle straight down into the carpet, methodically covering the entire area. This is a long process but you will be amazed at how much dirt, grime and other disgusting stuff you are able to extract from the shag when you sit down and take your time with it. If your shag rug does not have a lot of traffic going over it, then doing this process a couple times a year should get the job done.

A little trick that has worked successfully is if you get blood on the rug, warm up a glass of milk and pour some into a wash cloth, then rub the cloth back on forth on the spotted area for five minutes, then take a towel and dry it up, check on the rug in about an hour and the blood should be gone from the shag rug, if not you should repeat the process one more time and that should do the trick. When you see that the spot is gone, vacuum over the area a few times to get the pile back to normal.

A shag rug is a great thing to have and as you can see it is very easy to clean when you follow a few simple steps. Good Luck!

Pros of Shag Area Rugs

Shag carpets add an element of fun and sheerness to any room. They come in all sizes and colors. A simple plain colored shag area carpet still adds a fun design element due thanks to the interesting texture. A floral or striped shag carpet further ups the design element by adding an interesting element. Often times shag area carpet is really seen as the center of a room. Pulling together many design elements with its eye catching appeal. A shag area carpet of any type can help to add a more modern feel to even the drabbest of rooms. Regardless of the material used to create a shag area rug, one of the most enticing elements of these rugs is the softness and welcoming feel they produce. The luxurious feel of these rugs make them ideal for bedrooms and wide open areas. Adding a shag rug to any room adds a sense of comfort and leisure. These rugs are also quite easy to clean. Running a vacuum over the rug or performing a quick shake of the rug will remove most of the dust and dirt that accumulates during regular day to day activities.

Cons of Shag Area Rugs

Some people have a negative association with shag area rugs as being outdated or even retro fashion. Many people find the price of shag area rugs to high. Especially since most shag rugs are smaller in size and are not used as a wall to wall floor covering now days. Another downside of a shag area rug for some is the fact that these rugs really do pull the attention to themselves. They are rugs that are meant to be a focal point of any room. The actual shag of the area rugs themselves is also at times seen as a negative by many consumers. The long shag of fabrics can sometimes soak up stains that would have otherwise been easily removed or can even start to “shed”. Most high quality shag area rugs will not shed, but the lesser quality products may be known to do just that. The long stalks of fabric of a shag area rug also make it possible for small items to be easily lost in them. For that reason alone, a shag area rug may not be best suited for a home with children and the toys that so often have teeny tiny parts. Really taking the time to focus on the use of the rug and the decorating direction of the room will help to determine rather a shag area rug is right for ones design taste.
