Types of Shag Area Rugs

by sladetanner on May 9, 2010

Shag area rugs have been making a come back over the last few years. Their beauty, softness and comfort make them a great addition to any home, office, apartment or condo. They do a great job of adding style and color to neutrally colored areas. There are several types of shag rugs available. Which one you buy depends on where you are using it and the feel and look you desire.

Shag area rugs usually have a higher pile than other types of rugs. Typically, the pile is up to 3 or 4 inches long. However, short shag rugs exist which has a shorter, more dense pile. However, the more popular look are the shaggy rugs most where the pile just lays there.

Flokati Shag Rugs

Flokati rugs originated from a village in Greece. They used the wool from sheeps and goats to make rugs, bedding, blankets and clothing.  These rugs come in a variety of grades. Grades are simply the weight of the rug. The larger the weight of the rug the greater the grade and thickness. If you are using a flokati rug in a heavily trafficked area then you should buy a heavier (grams) rug.

Chenille Shag Rugs

Chenille is actually the process in which these types of rugs are made. Chenille area rugs are made of several materials including cotton, rayon and polyester. This type of processing creates a very soft and comfortable rug. This is probably the softest shag area rug that you will find.

Synthetic Shag Rugs

These shag rugs are made with synthetic fibers to replicate the feel of a natural rug. These come in a wide range of styles, colors and sizes. Synthetic shag rugs are are usually less expensive because of the man made material and are generally easier to clean.

Olefin is a common synthetic material used to produce a synthetic shag rug. Olefin is extremely tough and is resistant to stains, mold, mildew and will repel water. Olefin is sometimes referred to as polypropylene, polyolefin, or polyethylene

Leather Shag Rugs

These fun rugs come in several types of darker colors and have a great, authentic look. Essentially, these are strips of leather that are attached to a study backing material. Leather shag rugs are very durable and will last a long time if maintained properly. One drawback with these rugs is that they can be very expensive and generally cost more than other types of materials.

Wool Shag Rugs

These are great for comfort and durability. Wool shag area rugs are best for low traffic areas since they tend to shed more than other types of materials. Bedrooms, family room and other low traffic places might be good for this type of shag rug.

T Shirt Shag Rugs

These make great additions to kids or teenagers bedrooms. They are produced using recycled t-shirts remnants. T-Shirt shag rugs come in a variety of colors and styles because of the material it is produced from.

As you can see shag area rugs can be made with a variety of materials. If you are looking to spend very little you might search the synthetic shag rugs while if you are looking to make a statement and don’t mind spending a few bucks take a look at the leather shag rugs.

What to look for when buying a shag area rug

by sladetanner on April 26, 2010

For years shag area rugs were thought of as being retro items that had no place in the décor of today. This has changed drastically over the last few years. Shag area rugs have grown to be one of the most popular types of floor covering. Long gone are the days of green, wall to wall shag carpet; area rugs are now the best way to bring in the modern shag look. These area rugs are a great way to bring a modern element into the room without overwhelming the space. With so many different styles, shapes and designs available, these rugs are perfect for virtually any room and décor theme. For this reason alone, they have become one of the go to items for any home.

Choosing the perfect shag area rug for your home can be tricky. Since they are such unique, eye catching pieces, it is important to pair these rugs with the perfect accessories and furniture. These rugs look best when they are used along with other modern décor elements. Placing a shag area rug with a streamlined coach, simple furniture and clean cut lines is the best way for the rug to be showcased. When these rugs are paired with busy prints or ornate furniture they can seemingly get lost.

These are rugs are made in almost every size and shape imaginable. Taking the time to determine which size area rug would best fit your room is important. Often times, these area rugs are used in living rooms or bedrooms, where the rug helps to bring the look together. Making sure that the rug is a perfect fit for the furniture to be placed around or on, helps to keep the room looking polished and complete. If the rug is too large or too small, it can look as if it was a last minute addition to the room.

Shag area rugs are fairly simple to clean. Since the long weave of the rug can sometimes get caught in vacuums, one of the easiest way to clean them is by shaking. This helps to rid the rug of dirt, dust and other elements. It is important to take this into consideration when buying a shag area rug. If you are living in an apartment complex on an upper level, it may be difficult for you to transport the area rug outdoors for a good shake.
